PRESS & REVIEWS

Katerina Brown is a Russian American singer married to West coast bassist Gary Brown now living in the San Francisco Bay Area. On her debut recording, Mirror, Brown mixes three Russian tunes among five standards to provide a provocative jazz recording. Russian proves a beautiful language when sung, as Brown proves on the title piece, “The Gate” and “It’s Snowing.” Her English delivery is accented, giving her performance an international flavor that works (”Can’t Take That Away from Me”) more often than not (”Moanin’”). Adam Shulman’s piano is a guide force on the recording.

KATERINA BROWN/Mirror:
This delightful Russian immigrant’s delightful debut finds her adapting to the Bay area jazz scene with no noticeable speed bumps for discerning ears to detect. With a load of stylistic mash ups that probably reflect the energy of her wandering feet, you keep expecting her to fall into a Marlene Dietrich cabaret presentation but her voice never drops that low—even if her attitude makes you think she can. As the world gets smaller, at least we get to enjoy thrushes that can fly higher. (Mellowtone 2018)
— CHRIS SPECTOR (Midwest Record Entertainment)
Brown was born in Russia in 1982 and spent the better part of a decade gigging around before going to a university to study harmony and theory etcetera. In 2015, she moved to the San Francisco bay area and this is her maiden recording. Four of the 11 tracks [48:56] here are Russian tunes and are quite lovely. The rest are standards, which includes a wonderful version of “Like A Lover”. She has a lovely voice, sings accent-free and has good instincts for jazz as demonstrated by her un-compromised backing, which stretches out nicely. A very promising debut, watch for a follow-up.
— Kenny Washington (Vocalist)

Singer Katerina Brown provides a wonderful debut with Mirror. The Russian-born chanteuse delivers vocals on this effort in a way that makes for truly pleasurable listening. The setlist of the recording is a mix of older and newer standards, with a couple of tunes in her native tongue added to the brew. The musicianship on the production is first-rate, courtesy of bassist and producer Gary Brown, pianist Adam Shulman, violinist Mads Tolling, drummers Akira Tana and Timothy Angulo, organist Brian Ho, trumpeter Miles Olmos, saxophonist Robert Roth, guitarist Ricardo Peixoto and percussionists Celso Alberti and Airto Moreira. Singer Kenny Washington joins in for a really nice duet with Brown. This is a truly wonderful recording.

Katerina Brown sings modern material and The Great Russian Songbook as she gets support from Adam Shulman/p, Gary Brown/b, Akira Tana/dr, Mads Tolling/vi, Ricardo Peixoto/g and guest horns. In her local language, her nasal tone is luminous on “The Gate” and strong as she holds her own with Angulo on “It’s Snowing.” She has a cabaret-style teaming with Kenny Washington on “They Can’t Take That Away From M” in a cozy duet and gets deep with Mike Olmos’ muted horn on “Hearing Ella Sing” as well as on the big beat of “Moanin.” Uptown.

Vocalist Katerina Brown, born and raised near St. Petersburg, Russia, and since 2015 a resident of San Bruno, makes her debut with Mirror, produced by her bassist husband Gary Brown and featuring a band of Bay Area musicians including pianist Adam Shulman, drummer Akira Tana, and vocalist Kenny Washington (her duet partner on “They Can’t Take That Away from Me”). The stylistic range is one of the album’s prime attractions as Katerina interprets three classic Russian songs (first in her native language, then in English translations), as well as favorites from the American repertory, and one by Brazilian composer Dori Caymmi.
