Kenny Washington adds a few lines of vocal assist on “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” on KATERINA BROWN’s MIRROR [Mellowtone Records 1016].
Brown was born in Russia in 1982 and spent the better part of a decade gigging around before going to a university to study harmony and theory etcetera. In 2015, she moved to the San Francisco bay area and this is her maiden recording. Four of the 11 tracks [48:56] here are Russian tunes and are quite lovely. The rest are standards, which includes a wonderful version of “Like A Lover”. She has a lovely voice, sings accent-free and has good instincts for jazz as demonstrated by her un-compromised backing, which stretches out nicely. A very promising debut, watch for a follow-up.
