Katerina Brown is a Russian American singer married to West coast bassist Gary Brown now living in the San Francisco Bay Area. On her debut recording, Mirror, Brown mixes three Russian tunes among five standards to provide a provocative jazz recording. Russian proves a beautiful language when sung, as Brown proves on the title piece, “The Gate” and “It’s Snowing.” Her English delivery is accented, giving her performance an international flavor that works (”Can’t Take That Away from Me”) more often than not (”Moanin’”). Adam Shulman’s piano is a guide force on the recording.
