Saturday, Dec 5 Katerina Brown Qunitet Live Stream 7P PST
Born in a small town outside St. Petersburg, Katerina Brown was drawn to music as an infant. She soaked up her father’s albums by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Studying classical music throughout her adolescence, she started performing in local clubs as a teenager, singing mostly blues and standards. By 21, she was a savvy bandleader in Moscow when she enrolled in the Saint-Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts. Her name is included in the popular jazz encyclopedia, Jazz in Saint-Petersburg: Who Is Who.
Her life took another turn in 2013 when she met bassist Gary Brown, who was touring in Russia with renowned Latin jazz pianist Rebeca Mauleón. As their relationship blossomed, she applied for a US visa and took lessons with leading creative figures such as Berklee’s Gabriel Goodman, JD Walter, and Raz Kennedy. During a monthlong stay in New York City she made the rounds, hitting jam sessions and hanging at Small’s and Birdland into the wee hours. She moved to the Bay Area in 2015 and quickly forged close ties to many of the region’s top players and performing at leading venues around the region.
For this special evening she will be performing with Gary Brown on bass, Adam Shulman on piano, Mike Olmos on horn, and Jason Lewis on drums. Her repertoire is eclectic; Bossa, American songbook, Russian tunes, and some originals, including a special holiday tune “The Bell Rings Ding Dong "
The Bell Rings Ding Dong brings the mood of celebration, cheer, joy, and homecoming, capturing the Christmas season's sites and sounds and emotions. This creative rendition is based on the well-known piece of Tchaikovsky's famous ballet The Nutcracker, Russian Dance (Trepak).
